RANDOLPH STONE

A DEEP DESIRE TO RELIEVE THE MISERY AND ILLS OF PEOPLE

The founder of polarity therapy is the Austrian Randolph Stone (1890-1981) who practiced the professions of naturopath, osteopath and chiropractor in the United States. He also studied the treatment methods of ancient Asian medicine, including acupuncture and Ayurveda.

Based on this work, he created Polarity Therapy by combining holistic and Western therapeutic methods. Motivated by an early search for the meaning of life and a deep desire to alleviate the misery and ills of his fellow human beings, Stone was a relentless seeker who pursued his studies insatiably until he encountered the Radhasoami. This meeting was decisive for Stone and it was the contact with this religious group from India that allowed him to understand the importance of the energetic dimension of the universe in order to then apply it to his therapy.

It was in the United States that Stone taught his healing art from the seventies. He died in India with his spiritual master at the age of 91. Gradually, this new form of treatment aroused interest. His teaching was later taken up by some of his dedicated students and gained momentum across the world. Today several associations oversee the activities of this alternative medicine.

Randolph Stone was thirteen years old when in 1903 he left Austria and immigrated to the United States with his family. Shortly after his arrival, he worked as a laborer on a farm in Wisconsin. The family that employed him saw in him the signs of a religious vocation and sponsored him to study at Concordia Lutheran College in Minnesota. But, he cannot continue on this path for long since the disease prevents him from doing so. After his recovery, he learned the trade of industrial machinist.

Around 1910, he decided to devote his life to the well-being of humanity by becoming a therapist. He then accumulates diplomas. To learn more about his academic training see Technique.  Randolph Stone finished writing down his therapy in the late 1950s when the craze for holistic medicine only made itself felt a little later, around 1965. Stone thus arrived at a pivotal period which preluded an important change of perspective, both from a social and a medical point of view. The material that this author left, seven course notebooks and two books, is also important. The density of information found there is linked to his research, which spans more than forty years.

Without stopping solely at the fields of medicine and ancestral traditions, Stone also looks at the side of the physical and electromagnetic sciences, of which he will retain particular aspects. From his point of view, the art of healing that he develops is based on science. Randolph Stone's written work is in fact an unexpected documentary source, as the information found there is so complete. His study is likely to give us precious clues to understand the anthropology underlying his practice and the basic principles of holistic medicine of which his therapy is a part. Randolph Stone has of course inspired a number of authors.

Stone actually defines Polarity Therapy as the art of using the correspondences and the right proportions between the parts of the body and its functions in order to heal. This art is based on electromagnetic energy fields that govern the five senses (5 elements) and the motor functions of the body. Before arriving at this definition, Stone first worked to understand what art is. The true artist is therefore distinguished by his knowledge of the cause of the problems and his ease in finding a solution.

It follows from all that has been said that Polarity Therapy is a creative activity. This creative activity includes three fundamental elements which are science (knowledge and reason), an adequate technique (skill and sensitivity) and inspiration-intuition  (contact with energy). Stone's system of thought is an attempt to restore the lost union between science and meaning, between the individual and the universe around him.
